Protect Yourself from Malware and Ransomware

Every day presents new challenges in the battle for digital security.  New viruses, worms, adware, malware, ransomware and other nasty files are released daily that compromise the safety and integrity of your computer. 

In an effort to combat these malicious efforts, c-Systems Software wanted to share with you a few routine maintenance procedures.

  1. Update your Operating System
    Malicious developers relentlessly search for vulnerabilities within software to exploit in order to steal data or render your computer useless.  It is imperative that you keep your Operating System (Windows) up-to-date.  By doing so, you are limiting any previously known attack/entry points into your system.  Once updated, make sure you have enabled Automatic Windows Updates to continue to limit these vulnerabilities.

  2. Obtain Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware software
    Every computer on your network should have a copy of anti-virus and anti-malware software.  This provides preventive protection as well as the necessary tools to quarantine and/or remove an infection if one occurs on your computer.   C-Systems software recommends that users keep the Windows Defender software up-to-date to receive maximum protection.  Please check with c-Systems Support prior to installing any 3rd party software on your business system network to avoid software conflicts and potential issues. 

  3. Backup, Backup, Backup!
    One of the most important procedures you can make into a routine is the process of backing up your data.  Backup hard drives have become reasonable in price and with options ranging from 500MB’s to 5+ terabytes, you can be sure there is something that will house your data.  If you are looking for an off-site option, there is a multitude of cloud storage options available.  As an added layer of protection, c-Systems Software offers a fee-based automated daily backup service that provides peace of mind for our customers.     By having a backup of your data, you provide your insurance that your data will be available when you need it the most.  Nobody plans for hard drive failure, viruses, ransomware or other issues, so it pays to be prepared.

  4. Email Precautions
    In many cases, malicious content originates from shared emails.  This is why it is advised to avoid opening suspicious emails or clicking links you don’t know.  If the sender is unknown or the subject line information does not make sense, it is possible that the email is SPAM or potentially malicious.  Also, avoid downloading attachments if you are not expecting one.  This is a good discussion to have with employees that have access to computers on your network.

While no plan is guaranteed, these steps will help avoid catastrophic data loss in the instance an issue is experienced.  By establishing preventative maintenance routines, backups and avoiding unknown files and emails you will be avoiding some of the more common causes of data loss.

“I have been in the power equipment industry for literally my entire life. My grandfather owned and operated a power equipment dealership in Flint, MI since long before I was born. My father started his own tractor dealership in Clio, MI in 1968, when I was two years old. He ran the dealership out of the barn in our backyard for several years, and then moved to a larger location in Flint, MI. I started working summer jobs in the dealership with my father when I was a kid, and then started working full time for him after I finished school. He closed the business in 1992, and I went to work for another power equipment dealer in Auburn Hills, MI. That dealership happened to have c-Systems Software as their business system, so during the five years I was there I learned to use their software.

The best thing about my job at c-Systems is being in a company that has a “family” feel, rather than a “corporate” feel. I’ve worked my whole life in family businesses, and working here is no different. Our company does a great job of listening to ideas from our customers, and using those ideas to make the software work better for them.

Away from work I enjoy all shooting sports, cooking (mostly barbequing), fishing, and playing guitar.”

I started my career in the OPE industry in the early 1980s. After graduating Michigan State with a computer science degree, I moved to Texas to find more job opportunities due to the deep recession. I got a job installing computer equipment for NAPA auto parts dealers across the state.

My favorite part about my job at c-Systems is the people I work with. We’re a great team. We have great chemistry. We read each other’s minds. Our software is the best out there because it is engineered from the ground up specifically for this industry. It takes a narrow focus to be the best in that one area.

Outside of work my interest can be found in ultramarathons. My best so far is walking 90 miles in 24 hours. My goal is to walk 100 miles in 24 hours and have my name at the U.S. Track and Field office as being a centurion.
